Situated in the heart of Stellenbosch, on the corner of Church and Bird Street, you will find the very popular Schoon De Companje. The family business originally started out with the De Oude Bank Bakkerij, known for its amazing selection of freshly baked breads. Recently it underwent a revamp, transforming the bakery into a truly unique artisanal experience. Schoon De Companje now also houses a wine shop, coffee roastery, ice cream shop, butchery, bar and a section with fresh and local produce. A visit to Schoon De Companje is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a place where you can unwind and enjoy the warm and inviting ambience, the delicious food and get taken back to the good old days. The eatery is indeed worthy of the Dutch name, “Schoon”, translated as beautiful!
How was your business born?
Schoon de Companje came about when the space, which was originally the Dylan Lewis Gallery became available. Fritz Schoon has his Bakery, De Oude Bank Bakkerij, in the space next to it, so these two spaces linked up, it was perfect. His wife, Chanelle Schoon wanted to open and Artisan ice-cream shop and his sister, Katryn Schoon, has her Masters in Meat Science, wanted to open an ethical Boutique Butchery. The family business was born. Everything came together naturally after that, with the wine shop being the brain child of Fritz Schoon and Henk Kotze, his best friend. The Brasserij was something we had to extend, with having so many amazing Micro Brewers in South Africa. Us as a family are very passionate about ethical and hand produced foods and produce, it was natural to make the decision to do the business together as a family. You are always there for each other and it makes your days at work so much more fun.

WHAT DOES THE AMBIENCE (STYLE / DECOR ) OF THE RESTAURANT REFLECT?
It reflects an old village or town. You can come visit and get lost, step away from reality. The ambience is very warm, lots of wood and details which takes time to take in. And around every corner there is a friendly face to greet you. Our mother, Jenny Schoon, is the master mind behind the décor of Schoon de Companje. To be honest we don’t know what is going on in her head most of the time, but her execution and attention to detail is so spot on! She is truly an inspiration! All the wood and old pieces were sourced from old demolishing yards and antique shops, from Johannesburg to Cape Town. Jenny offered up some of her special pieces she has collected over the years, which we are very thankful for.
