Jot it down – handmade notebooks

Like many other creative people, I have developed a curious obsession with colourful notebooks. Not only does the cover appeal to me, but the pages inside must also have something special to it. Either the slight off-white coloured type of page or something with a delicate texture or a thin, smooth page with an almost transparent effect. We all love Moleskine notebooks, no doubt, but at the rate that I am going through these notebooks, buying a new one every time I run out of pages (although, I do waste a lot) will cost me quite a penny.
Therefore, I present you with today’s DIY: how to make your own notebook that will still have a pretty cover and some nice paper inside. These little notebooks might not replace the lovely Moleskines, but it will definitely be a fun little book to jot down your inspirations and notes. They also make great gifts! To make your own little handmade notebooks, download the free printable covers and follow the instructions below.

What you will need

  • 1 A3 page (something thicker, with a slight texture works well)
  • 10 A4 pages (any type you like, I used Reviva White 105 g)
  • 3 colourful buttons
  • Some colourful string (I used twine
  • A large needle
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • cutter
  • scissors

  • Step 1 for the cover

Download the free printable covers and print them out onto the A3 page.
Cut the covers out all around the edge, so that you end up with 3 different covers.
Now to fold the covers: place the covers with printed side down, first fold in the side flap with the solid colour on and keep that folded in.
  • Step 2

Then fold the rest of the cover in half.
Now fold  the colour side over the front of the cover.
  • Step 1 to make the inside pages

Take your A4 paper and mark them into horizontal strips of 70 mm x 297 mm.
Take your cutter or scissors and carefully cut the strips where you marked them.
You will end up with 30 strips of 70 mm x 297 mm.
  • Step 2

Divide them into groups of 10, so that each notebook will have 10 strips of paper.
Fold each of the paper strips in half, you will now have 70 mm x 148 mm folded sheets.
Place each folded sheet into another, so that you end up with 10 sheets piled together.
  • Step 1 to bind the notebook

Place the 10 sheets of paper inside the cover, so that all the folded parts are on the same side and lined up.
Take your needle and string and stitch the pages and the cover together, 3 to 4 stitches should be enough.
  • Step 2

Make a knot on each side of the string, from where it goes in and where it comes out.
  • Step 3

Take some string and your colourful buttons and pull the string through the buttonholes.
Tie the string once or twice around the notebook, so that the booklet will stay closed.
  • Step 4

Keep the string in place by pulling the string around the button.
