It’s no secret that we’re massive choco-holics and Honest Chocolate is on the top of our list of winter day treats! Only made with top notch ingredients and no cane sugar, theirs is a chocolate that’s a bit different from the rest. We can’t vouch for the banana bread bunny chow…but it’s all about balance isn’t is?! Live a little and go try their decadent delicacies on your next winter city adventure – you can thank us later!
The best time to go for a quiet conversation would be Saturday afternoon, but any day of the week is necessary for your chocolate fix. Honest Chocolate also has a small outlet at the Woodstock Exchange where you can buy their chocolate slabs, truffles and dairy-free ice cream. – Gabriella Esposito, photographer
About Honest Chocolate Café
Honest Chocolate Café in Wale Street, Cape Town, invites elements of indulgence and comfort. Besides the delicious coffee and copious amounts of chocolate offerings, their atmosphere gives you those all the winter feels. From the wooden coffee tables and emerald green couch, to the vintage shelve fittings and the cozy courtyard, the cafe celebrates warmth and comfort!
Ultimately, it’s an indulgent chocolate escape in the heart of the Mother City. Located between bustling Loop and Bree streets, the café has a typical Capetonian, relaxed atmosphere. On offer are delicious coffees (including almond milk flat whites), teas and decadent hot chocolates and a selection of chocolate truffles, tarts and cakes. Specialties include dairy-free milkshakes, a trademark ‘coconut dream’ drink and a banana bread bunny chow, which you can order as-is or served with their dairy-free ice cream.
Bonus! In the evenings, the infamous Secret Gin Bar opens in the courtyard behind the café, which has become the go-to spot – especially on First Thursdays!
It’s in the chocolate
Honest Chocolate is a small, artisanal chocolate company that was born and bred in Cape Town. They believe in keeping things hand-crafted, using old school methods with organically produced ingredients to produce a pure chocolate with a deliciously distinct taste.
Their chocolate is made using raw cacao, natural flavours (like sea salt, cracked coffee and raw cacao nibs), cocoa butter and sweetened with raw agave syrup. This means that their product is dairy free and pretty much the healthiest chocolate you can find!
Must-try items on their menu
My favourite item is their Dark Chocolate Cake, but I’ve been told that you have to try their banana bread bunny chow! Their chocolate bon bons are also the perfect take-away treat “for later”.
The café is usually filled with creatives and daydreamers, all local foodies! It’s difficult not to take a photo of your food when you’re spoiled with marble coffee table flat-lays and oozing, melting chocolate!
Honest Chocolate Café is open from Monday to Thursday between 09:00 and 18:00, Friday and Saturday between 09:00 and 21:00 and on Sundays from 09:00 to 16:00. Located at 64A Wale Street in Cape Town, make sure to pop in the next time you’re in the city!
