Four & Twenty

Four & Twenty, a brand new café and pantry, started as a happy day dream under the Eiffel Tower in 2011. On a trip to France, Owners Tracey -Leigh Genricks and Marijke Duminy was so enamoured with the European culture of almost worshiping flavour, that they vowed to bring that feeling back home.The daydream became a reality just last month when the café opened its doors on the four and twentieth day of April in Wynberg’s Chelsea Village.

The two Silwood trained chefs create dishes made with love, local produce and loads of seasonal flavours. Don’t expect the menu to be the same for more than two weeks, these two creatives enjoy coming  up with new dishes way too much. And if you can’t stay for lunch then at least pop in to grab some of the items from their product range or a freshly bread or fruit tartlet to take home.

 5 Minutes with Tracey -Leigh and Marijke

The most popular item on our menu is “Eggs Be-Licious”: Ciabatta toast, poached eggs, classic tangy hollandaise, confit baby tomatoes with either smoked salmon or bacon. It’s an ingenious classic and we celebrate every mouthful of its explosive flavour.

At home we cook…

We mostly cook the same type of food – as we discovered on our fateful trip together through the culinary hotspots of France. We both love simple food that speaks to the soul more than anything else. Home-made pasta with a simple tomato sauce or a freshly caught fish with a simple but fresh salad are some of our favourites.

Top food destination:

This is almost impossible to answer! Marijke has a secret love affair with the nation of Italy and would use any excuse to justify needing to go there for inspiration, whereas Tracy’s heart is actually still in France (we will simply have to go back to retrieve it… Such a pity…)

Latest food discovery is:

We have recently been experimenting with fruit curds. We started out with classic lemon, granadilla, lime and basil as well as our latest addition to our pantry shelves – lemon verbena curd. Its essential to have zesty curd on the shelf at home to spread onto a slice of toast or to simply devour it, one spoonful at a time.

In my shopping trolley I always have Extra Virgin Olive Oil (always local unless I feel like spending the earth), tomatoes, fresh bread, lemons (because everything tastes better with a tang), fresh basil (another secret obsession), cheese- specifically goats cheese, fior di latte, camembert.

The ambience of the restaurant reflects our ridiculous obsession with food and the people who enjoy it. Every single thing in our café was hand-picked to reflect our taste and our passion for this dream. We are both very family-orientated and have loved creating a space where people come together, listen to some beautiful music, perhaps glance at a scene or two of a classic black and white film (on our wall), eat something both surprising and enticing, and take life down a gear – even if just for a cup of coffee. We always feel that we are going down the rabbit hole every morning when we unlock our front door and step into our very own cave of wonders.

We chose this interior because we wanted bright, fresh and clean colours that complement our pastry counter’s offerings and  reflects our whimsical fascination with an almost forgotten way of life – the way of food, literature, music and all things of the heart.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

We were both classically trained at Silwood, where we not only learned how to physically produce the food of our dreams, but we were inducted into a world of creativity and drive for excellence that has had a deep impact on both of our cooking styles. Further, we have both travelled extensively from Chiang Mai to Barcelona (sometimes with the privilege of cooking in some of the world’s top kitchens) and have tasted anything we could get our hands on. Having grown up in South Africa, though, we also have a deeply local food story to tell and hope to reminisce with our customers about a shared African story that tells a tale of home.
