I have a soft spot for anything ceramic. I find it hard to resist a pretty bowl, jug or whimsical ceramic ornament, especially if I think it might find a place on the floating shelves in my kitchen. So it’s a good thing that The Ceramic Factory is in Linden Johannesburg, as I will do my budget some serious damage if I had to visit their new store on a regular basis. Carla, our Pretty Blog girl in the big city of Johannesburg, recently paid a visit to this gorgeous shop that opened in March this year and she was blown away. We joined her in spirit as we followed her musings and snaps via Instagram.
At the ceramic factory you will find pieces with “a sense of humour”, as owner Rial Visagie likes to call it. With ceramics being something that women are traditionally more interested in, The Ceramic Factory team try to turn this perspective on it’s head. So while they offer many, many beautiful items that women will fancy, they have also focused on pieces with a strong “male appeal”. Their Citizenship Collection, with its strong South African flavour, includes biltong platters as well as ‘vintage car’ salt and pepper sets, among others, that the guys seem to adore. Lauren Kim also made her way to The Ceramic Factory to bring your these gorgeous images.
The specific items mentioned above have been handmade in our factory in Ferndale, Johannesburg. We are privileged to have the best sculptors and mould makers in the world. There is a lot of investment in finding the right people and in harnessing and developing skills. The team has a fundamental understanding of my own vision, but it is also important that the process allows for collaboration between us all. We’re a tight-knit bunch at Ceramic Factory.

You have your own factory, tell us what goes on behind the scenes?

Everything is made in our factory in Ferndale, Johannesburg. We are privileged to have the best sculptors and mould makers in the world. We’re a tight-knit bunch at Ceramic FactoryThe store’s interior design was inspired by its location. The openness of the showroom with the floor-to-ceiling windows and all the natural light streaming in meant we just filled in the gaps with our product. This allows for harmonious interaction between the product and the space around it. It’s a very clean and uncluttered space in which visitors can be drawn into the world of Ceramic Factory.

How would you describe your personal style?

Minimalistic.

What inspired the store’s interior?

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the people of our country and their heroic stories, whilst keeping a sense of humour about themselves.

What is your favourite destination?

Cape Agulhas, the most southern point of Africa. I adore the smell of the sea and the untouched beauty.

Who inspires you as a creative?

My style heroes are new talents being showcased at markets like The Collective in Kramerville.

What is your dream for The Ceramic Factory?

To have at least four shops across South Africa and then to take over the world! I am so tired of imported brands that flood the local market. I’d like to see Ceramic Factory’s items making an impact on the international market and making South Africa proud.

gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! Love the tiles! I wonder if they’re able to make tiles from scratch based on a specific design?
