Maboneng Johannesburg’s Place of Light

Us Capetonians often make the mistake of thinking that Johannesburg folks are all about business. Maboneng, a buzzing precinct in Johannesburg East with its art galleries, Sunday market, boutique shops, eateries and collaborative workspaces is proving us very wrong. Maboneng, meaning “Place of Light” in Sotho, is like a town within a town and adds some shine to a formerly forgotten part of the city. We paid Maboneng a visit to see where some of the most exciting young artists and designers spend their time. If you find yourself in Johannesburg, then make sure you plan a visit to this vibrant, inspiring place.

Be sure to pop in to Eat Your Heart Out for their gourmet hotdogs. It’s delicious and it is served with lots of mustard!
Terres D’Afrique has a stylish store, housing their heavenly organic skincare range. The yoga studio close by, Cocoon, uses the lovely range for their facials and massages. This is one store in Maboneng you can’t walk past without popping in.

If you’re looking for a fun way to explore the city, join Critical Mass for their monthly cycle tour through the city. It is very relaxed and people dress up in silly costumes and explore different eateries and spend time with friends.
