The dipped gold heart necklaces were conceptualised by Caera O’Shaughnessy, a stylist and make-up artist in the film industry, just over three years ago. “I received a similar heart as a gift for my 30th birthday, which a friend bought in Germany. I wanted to give my sister a heart, and when I couldn’t find one in Cape Town, I decided to make one.”

With a background in jewellery design, O’Shaughnessy had 50 hearts made and took to wearing hers daily. “Friends wanted to know where they could also get one. Josie Borain has a little shop in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay and started selling My Gold Heart. That’s when some of the larger retailers noticed us and we’ve been flying ever since!”

For O’Shaughnessy My Gold Heart symbolizes the love and empathy inherent in all individuals. “It’s a little seed of love that sits around your neck, and serves as a reminder that we have a choice to act from a place of compassion in each moment. A change of heart heals the world.”

I love anything to do with food {especially eating}, collecting pretty things, nesting, afternoon naps, reading and pinning. I am terrible at any kind of needle work, and I secretly envy those who can knit, sew and crochet. Freshly picked jasmin makes me happy. If I could choose my last meal on earth it, would be warm ciabatta bread with lashings of butter.
